Mindil Beach

Andrew and I headed over to the Mindil Beach market in Darwin around 5 pm Sunday night, where every Saturday and Sunday there is a vast assortment of booths selling clothes, trinkets, and Australian crafts, plenty of music and buskers, and every type of food imaginable, next to a popular beach facing west. The market gets into full swing in the late afternoon, with a real party atmosphere, and hundreds of people gathered on the beach for sunset, which was spectacular.

The Aussies are wonderful, friendly and gregarious, full of life, unpretentious, and always ready for a good time. I don’t know whether it a pioneering spirit, the shared adversity of what can be a tough land, or the by-product of long years of isolation, but whatever the recipe is it works.

  1. Geezzz Bill, you're gonna frighten everyone about crocks. We don't tell visitors about such things as it kills tourism. Speaking of things that kill, we don't mention sharks, spiders, snakes, wild pigs, brain-melting mosquito bites, deadly fish, killer bees, hungry goanas, poisoned seafood, no water, hot sun, too much grog and stupid people. Other things like exploding BBQ tanks, rolling into the fire while in a drunken sleep, falling off a cliff, drowning in rivers, waterholes and oceans (high on the killer list), getting speared by an abbo for looking at his ugly old missus and sunstroke to name just a few.
Otherwise it's a great life. Only tourists go outback, Aussies stay around city pubs and coffee houses, eat sushi and nasi goreng, sip chardonnay and bitch about the government.
Glad you're all having fun. Tell Wes to keep an eye out for a double headed penny. Cheats use them in 2up. He'll win every flip forever, unless it's in the outback where he'll be shot when discovered, usually after the first toss. .
